The Bible and Today’s News

When was the last time something you heard on the nightly news or read in your local newspaper had direct relevance to the Bible? Last week a Harvard researcher named Karen King found a piece of parchment on which were the words “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife.”  How do we as believers in Jesus Christ respond to such claims? Of course, something like this parchment fragment will be the subject of much debate within the Christian world. This will cause speculation and curiosity for many people and will be the source of doubt and confusion for many others. Personally, I think the answer is fairly simple.

The Bible claims to be the divine Word of God. As such, it is authoritative and God-breathed. To disbelieve any part of the Bible or to add new information to God’s Scripture is to disobey and disbelieves God.  According to the Bible, Jesus never married and theologically, could not marry. What would have happened if Jesus married? If Jesus married and then had a child, the child would be divine because he or she would be born from God.  That would open the possibility that there could be people living today who are biologically related to Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

I certainly don’t have all the answers, and I can’t explain what this fragment means. What I do know is this … because the Bible is absolutely authoritative and sufficient for all we need to know about God and His relationship to His people, I know that anything that contradicts in any way the truth found in Scripture is false. God has protected His truth with a closed canon. You, too, can be certain that events like this don’t have to shake up your faith.  So, listen to current events with confidence because God has given us the real truth in black and white.
