Fact Finder and Lying Lips

Every day we are bombarded with political ads.  Strong words … angry words … findger-pointing at rival candidates … namecalling … and sometimes outright lies. Even the truth often gets a spin so that knowing what’s true and what’s false can boggle the mind.

I understand the competition. The stakes are high. It’s the highest position of power in the most powerful country in the world. Some candidates seem to have no compunction of saying whatever they feel is necessary to sway the public. Lies float over the airways, and the same videos appear on television over and over until all of us just want to cast our vote and have the election be over.

I have seen many elections through the years, but it seems to me that this time there are more lies and that the lies are more blatant and obvious.  How, I wonder, can any intelligent candidate believe that an informed, attentive citizen won’t see through the lies that are shouted with such certainly to fawning, enthusiastic crowds? And then, after speeches and debates, the networks send out the fact finders to verify the truth and debunk the lies.

I think we all hate lies. So what does Scripture say about lying?

“There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him … a false witness who pours out lies.” (Proverbs 6:16)

“A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies  will not go free.”  (Proverbs 19:5)

I hate lies. What can a person do against lies? A lie is spoken, and no matter how hard an innocent person tries to correct the lie, it already has a life of its own. Soon it doesn’t seem to matter what’s true because so many people have heard the lie, and the seeds of doubt have begun to spout and grow. God hates lies, and liars who seem to get away with lying have to come before a holy God.

If you are like me, sometimes I think that the lies are stronger than the truth.Telling lies aren’t playing fair.  How can good people know the truth? Can even God undo the damage that lies cause?

As a concerned citizen and a believer in Jesus I must trust that God is more powerful than the lies. He is omnisicent — He knows the all things. He is Truth — He distinguishes truth and fiction. He is sovereign — He controls every event, including every election. Yes, I need  to do my responsibiity to research the candidates and then vote. I need to pray that God will work out His will in the political races in this nation. Then I must trust God and rest that He knows best. I can do that. And someday, if lies have prevailed, then I can be certain that the liar will stand before the Almighty God and give an account of Himself.
