Daily Life in Ancient Galilee

This week in a local church in the Harrisburg-Mechanicsburg, PA, area, I’m doing a workshop on Daily Life in Ancient Galilee. Knowing what life was like in first century Galilee will help students and teachers alike understand how Jesus lived growing up in Nazareth and spending much of His years of ministry around the Sea of Galilee.

As part of writing God’s Great Covenant – New Testament 1, I researched the culture of the Jews, and now little details of the gospel stories have greater meaning. Plus, to me, a history lover, it was fun as well.

Below are a few books that I found helpful that you also might like.

Daily Life at the Time of Jesus by Miriam Feinberg Vamosh

Food at the Time of the Bible by Miriam Feingberg Vamosh

These two books have one-page subject descriptions, glossy pages and bright pictures. They are available on Amazon.

Manners and Customs of Bible Lands by Fred H. Wright. This book is an older book, but there are good used copies of Amazon.  This is a more in-depth covering of the parts of daily life presented it in an easy to read style with many black-and-white drawn illustrations.

Finally, there is always the classic book, Sketches of Jewish Social Life in the Time of Christ by Alfred Edelsheim. This is written at an adult reading level (and style) and is chocked full of facts and detailed descriptions.

Do you or your child like history, particularly ancient cultures, check out these books?
