Thoughts on Deuteronomy #10 — It’s not too difficult for you.

“Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.”

These words of Moses are an encouragement to us today as well as to his original audience, the Israelites.  Moses was speaking his last words to the people he had led for forty years. He had just finished reminding God’s people of what the God expected of them in the land they would soon be entering. He listed the blessings given for obedience and the curses enacted on disobedience. And now, at the end of his speech he tells the people, “It’s not too hard to do what God has commanded.”

The land they were entering was a heathen land corrupted by pagan religious practices and immorality. When the Israelites entered the land, the evil culture would be all around them, making it easy to forget Yahweh and easy to fall into idolatry. Yes, forsaking the LORD would be an easy thing to do, but holding fast to the LORD and His life-giving law was not too difficult to do. It was possible for the Israelites to remain faithful — challenging but not too difficult.

These words provide encouragement for us today as well. We live in a culture that has for the most part forsaken the God of the Bible. People reject God’s authority, enjoy God’s gifts while ignoring the gracious Giver of the gifts, and espouse the idolatry of a prosperous society. We live in this environment, and often the voice of God is drowned out by the world around us. We try to raise our children to have godly values, and sometimes wonder if our words are taking root. The promise from the LORD is the same to us as it was to the Israelites: “It’s not too difficult.”

Yes, it is difficult, and we get discouraged by our efforts. But the LORD says it’s not TOO difficult. It is possible to be different in this world. It is possible to be a flicker of light that will draw others, including our children and grandchildren, back to the LORD.

The way of obedience is life. The LORD pleads with His people, “Now choose life so that you and your children may life and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life.”

Real life is living as obedient children in God’s household. All of us need to close our ears to the call of the world around us that promises life and bring death. It’s not too difficult to please the LORD, and by His grace we certainly can do it.
