Say hello to Tobias!

See that friendly looking fellow with the cheery wave on the cover of GGC: OT2! Sitting on the porch of Solomon’s temple with a feather in his cap and a pouch full of scrolls, Tobias, the royal chronicler, says, “Hello.”

Tobias as royal chronicler has the task of introducing each unit of this second book of the GGC series. Tobias, of course, is fictional, but in Old Testament times the role of royal chronicler (also called royal recorder, secretary, or scribe) was an important one.  The kings had royal chroniclers to write correspondence, keep annals of kingdom events, and sometimes represent the king on royal business.

Scripture gives the names of men who served as recorders or secretaries for King David and King Solomon (2 Samuel 8:15-18, 1 Chronicles 18;14-17) and for King Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:18, 37).  For more information about the structure of civil government during Israel’s monarchy see Illustrated Manners and Customs of the Bible, J.I. Packer and M.C. Tenney, Thomas Nelson Publishers, pp. 319-329.

I hope that Tobias adds some color to GGC: OT2 and that children enjoy reading about him just as I enjoyed creating him.

As you
